As the most local government body the Parish Council is often the first port of call for many residents enquiring about public services and we endeavour to answer these queries as efficiently as possible. Our workload has risen considerably in recent years and we endeavour to meet the challenges posed by the government’s Localism policies and County Council cuts to services such as the Youth Club and Library. However, we rely mainly on volunteers to undertake most of our work and currently do not have anywhere near the resources or devolved powers of higher tiers of local government.

Where does the Parish Council get its money from?

Each year a small sum of money called a precept is collected through your Council Tax. We also regularly apply for grants to purchase equipment or to fund projects (such as G-Fest and the regeneration work on The Acres). Income is also received from rental of rooms at the Grosvenor Centre and tenancy leases at the allotments.

This money is used to provide and maintain a number of amenities for parishioners - including the Grosvenor Centre, The Acres, Village Green, Chippy Jumps and numerous other small open spaces and facilities. Employment of the clerk and support officer also provides the Parish Council with essential administrative provision backing to carry out every day executive duties.

Where is our Parish?

Gnosall has a relatively large parish that stretches from north of the A519 at Knightley, down past the village of Gnosall to include the hamlets of Bromstead, Moreton and Outwoods in the southwest. The main A518 road effectively bisects the parish into north and south halves.

We have a relatively large parish with almost 5000 residents – the majority of whom live in Gnosall itself. Consequently we have quite a large Parish Council (with 16 councillors) and deal with a much busier workload than most other Parish Councils in Staffordshire. The parish is divided into areas called Wards. Gnosall has three wards; Gnosall, Knightley and Moreton. Each ward is represented by a number of Parish Councillors in relation to the population in that ward. There are 12 Parish Councillors in Gnosall, three in Moreton and one for Knightley.

You can learn more about the structure of the Parish Council and role of the Councillors in Part 2 of this feature in September’s issue.
