The Shropshire Union Canal Project

The Best Kept Village Team (BKV) have for many years kept the canal towpath from the Cowley Tunnel to the Railway Bridge clear of litter and general debris. The team give the benches and tables an annual fresh coat of paint. This year we have painted the strapping posts and other ironware all with the intention of making the canal area as attractive as possible to both villagers and visitors.

We have been concerned over the last couple of years about the state of the towpath, which in many places is almost impassable with very wet and muddy patches. We have had three meetings with the Canal & River Trust (CRT) and expressed our concerns along with our desire to make the canal area attractive and user friendly.

The CRT have made a start at improving the tow path with work being done on the sections from the Cowley Tunnel to the Boat Inn bridge and a section north of the Railway bridge.  We have been told the remaining sections will be improved in the coming weeks with a proper raised towpath completed by the autumn of 2017.

The BKV team have agreed to 'adopt' our section of the canal, which essentially means we provide the manpower to maintain our area and CRT provide the materials and any training. We expect to be moving hard-core, painting benches, clearing small bushes, helping build water points etc.

Barry Witts from Coton Mill has agreed to lead our efforts working with CRT.
